Lindsay Gerber and beaux-art architect Eileen Gordon led the design of this extensive remodel and brought us into the project knowing that the intricate millwork, fine materials, and attention to every detail demanded a high level of experience.

Designed in 1969 by eminent Bay Area architect Goody (Goodwin) Steinberg, the Atherton home was a hallmark of the architect’s Modern-Wright style featuring dramatic spaces, clerestory windows, and rough stone columns supporting broad wooden beams extending inside and out. All of the key architectural design features were respected in the renovation, with Lindsay’s thoughtfully selected finishes, fixtures and bespoke furnishings adding fresh new warmth and sophistication to the retro-modern home.

Bringing in more natural light was a key factor in the design brief so some structural work allowed for a more open kitchen area. Skylights and additional windows were added in some spaces, and the large skylight above the pillared atrium was replaced. Biancone Italian limestone replaced the original terracotta floor tiles, adding a soft bounce of illumination and sharp contrast to the vertical stonework and richly stained walnut paneling. All of the finishes had a strong lean into the original build, so for example, custom cabinetry and new hardware did not stray far from the simplicity and functionality of the original design. Even the sunken bathtub was demolished only to the concrete base and refinished onsite in Navona travertine.

We are always incredibly proud of our new builds, but there is something special about working on an historically relevant home and seeing the finished result in all its simple elegance and restraint.
