Underneath the Arches
/Some time ago we posted framing photos on Instagram with the rhetorical question, “Isn’t framing beautiful?”. Back then, it was certainly a beautiful and rapid change from the steel frame structure to finally seeing the shape of a house, albeit in skeleton form. Several months on, the framing continues, though in more detail and finesse, with carefully formed pieces shaping the visually dramatic groin vaulted ceilings above sweeping arches. Along the exterior elevations, the team is putting the finishing touches to the rough openings, forming the last of the classic arches, and applying a waterproofing membrane in preparation for the door and window installations. So more broadly, the rhetorical question should be “Isn’t building beautiful?”.
As we capture the people and the progress of our projects, we do this amid a global health crisis and a sense of fear and uncertainty that has touched us all. Whether you’re family, friend, architect, builder, or you simply follow us on social media, our priority is the health and safety of those around us while continuing to share — perhaps offer a moment of respite — the small moments of beauty we see in the craft of building.
Looking up: vaulted groin ceiling meets classic arch opening
Steady hand: cutting the perfect radius for a window opening
Rough openings: single arched door opening (left); waterproofing membrane being applied (right)
Room with a view: framer is building out the window openings in the octagonal rotunda
Notching it up: carpenters installing blocking for the ceiling beams
Cavenous: the wood slats form the contour and structure of the groin vaulted ceiling on the ground floor
Gently does it: the first of the windows arrive from Europe.
