Puzzle Piecing

While construction and build out of the the main house continues, the surrounding retaining walls are getting the stone veneer applied far ahead of any other landscape construction work. We’re thinking about the weather, because once the fall and winter months come and we’re focused on the interior of the house, the retaining walls will be in place to do their job in the event of any heavy rain or winter storms.

At the site, except for the occasional high pitch whir of a grinder or wet saw, there are periods of relative quiet as the stone masons, each working a section of the terrace walls, select, measure and cut various pieces of stone. Of course there’s an art in all of this: while the stones are hand cut and the straight edges are chiseled and chipped away, the pieces appear horizontally and vertically level once mortared in place. Stepping back and looking across the entire length of the wall, there is an overall uniformity achieved consisting of various sizes, color and texture. It’s not so much putting a jigsaw puzzle together as it is creating one from scratch. Now, let it rain.
